Top of the Agenda: Mideast Talks
With U.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu set to meet in Washington next Monday--their first bilateral meetings since their respective inaugurations-
Netanyahu met Jordan's King Abdullah yesterday, but the Jerusalem Post reports the two leaders sent out "starkly different messages" following the meetings. http://m1e.net/
Abdullah, the article says, pressed Netanyahu to immediately declare his support for a two-state solution--a goal Israel's prior government had stated but that Netanyahu has thus far shied away from.
Meanwhile, Pope Benedict XVI concluded his eight-day tour of the Middle East (BBC). http://m1e.net/
Analysis:
- In a new interview with CFR.org, Martin Indyk, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel, says Obama's meetings with Netanyahu likely won't produce open confrontation, as some analysts have predicted. Indyk adds, however, that Netanyahu may have trouble reconciling Obama's calls for a two-state solution with the demands of his political base. http://m1e.net/
- CFR's Elliott Abrams, writing in the Wall Street Journal, says the meetings could prove much more politically significant for Netanyahu than for Obama. http://m1e.net/
