One year after freedom, South Sudan is in crisis

A year after gaining independence, South Sudan is on the verge of running out of money after shutting down oil production -- which is responsible for 98% of its revenue -- in its ongoing dispute with Sudan. The country might not be able to pay teachers and health care workers by September, yet President Salva Kiir is adamant: "No nation can prosper by surrendering control of its economy to another." Food insecurity and child malnutrition are on the rise, the United Nations says. The Guardian (London) (7/9), Chicago Tribune/Reuters (7/8), Reuters (7/8) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"In the developing world, there is an access issue, but it centers on cost and training. There isn't enough money to pay for HIV testing, and there aren't enough providers trained in counseling people who take the test."

  • Global Fund chief says donations pay off
Developing-world costs have plummeted for treating patients with HIV/AIDS and providing insecticide-treated anti-malaria bed nets, each attributable to efforts by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, said Gabriel Jaramillo, head of the fund. "Put your skin in the game now, because the out-years will be much cheaper as your number of cases goes down," Jaramillo said. Nearly half of girls in Niger marry before 15, the highest global rate of child marriage. Such marriages could become more pervasive as the hunger crisis deepens in the Sahel region of West Africa, where parents in need of cash and animals exchange girls for dowries. "The fear is ... that more parents will use marriage as a survival strategy," said Djanabou Mahonde, UNICEF chief of child-protection programs. In Bangladesh, girls are dropping out of school, with some schools closing, because of pervasive sexual harassment known as "Eve-teasing." Boys stalk and bully girls on their way to school, and some parents are encouraging child marriages to avoid the bullying. AlertNet (7/6) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
