Invitation to a meeting sponsored by the Environmental Change and Security Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center:

Confronting the Crisis of Sustainability and Resource Scarcity

Featuring the Right Honourable Hilary Benn, U.K. Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and Member of Parliament

Thursday, May 14, 2009, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The world is facing a crisis of sustainability. The volatile oil and food prices of 2008 served to warn that unless we take action, climate change, environmental degradation, and rising global population could increase the pressure on food, water, and other resources to catastrophic levels. The U.K. and the United States are not likely to experience direct shortages, but they will be affected as other nations struggle to cope.

Building on last month's G20 summit in London, Hilary Benn will consider how we can begin to address the challenges of resource security and the transition to a sustainable, green economy. Benn is U.K. Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Member of Parliament for the West Yorkshire constituency of Leeds.

If you are interested but unable to attend the event, please tune in to the live or archived webcast at www.wilsoncenter.org. The webcast will begin approximately 10 minutes after the posted meeting time. You will need Windows Media Player to watch the webcast. Visit Microsoft to download the free player.

Location: 6th Floor Flom Auditorium, Woodrow Wilson Center, at the Ronald Reagan Building: 1300 Pennsylvania Ave., NW ("Federal Triangle" stop on Blue/Orange Line)

Note: Due to heightened security, entrance to the building will be restricted and photo identification is required. Please allow additional time to pass through security.
