Gates Foundation is changing the face of global development aid

The Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, in co-sponsoring the family-planning summit in London this week, showed that it was "not merely filling in gaps left by others but acting to change the behaviour of countries," writes The Economist. The mission of the foundation has expanded since it was founded in 1994, and Melinda Gates says family planning has replaced vaccination at the top of the development agenda. "Beyond displacement and the humanitarian crisis, there are serious concerns with regards to the prospect of restoring a legitimate government in Bamako and dealing with rebel groups in the north. ECOWAS is committed to supporting a transition to constitutional rule by March 2013, as well as supporting the Malian army in 'crushing' the rebellion in the north."

  • UN assault targets rebels in eastern DR Congo
United Nations peacekeepers, in a rare offensive, teamed up with government troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo to use helicopter gunships against M23 rebels north of Goma. Numerous countries in the Great Lakes region Thursday backed an international military response to suppress the rebels, including Rwanda, which has been accused of supporting M23. • Massacre in Syria is reportedly deadliest of conflict
About 220 people were reported killed today in what observers say was the biggest one-day toll during 16 months of conflict in Syria. Security forces in the province of Hama used helicopters and tanks to attack residents of the village of Tremseh before letting loose militiamen, who allegedly killed survivors, mostly civilians, execution-style. Envoy Kofi Annan singled out the regime of President Bashar Assad for blame amid reports that the government was moving its stockpiles of nerve agent, mustard gas and cyanide. • High rewards for human traffickers in Africa
Human trafficking between the Horn of Africa and South Africa has come to the fore after the drowning and suffocation of nearly 100 migrants in Ethiopia and Tanzania. Smugglers are attracted by high profits with few risks, capitalizing on the desperation of people fleeing conflict, oppression, poverty and drought. "For most Africans, South Africa is like the closest thing to Europe or America and it's easier to get to," said a member of the Ethiopian Diaspora Development Association. • Rio+20 defended at global resources conference
Academics and business leaders said Thursday at the Resource 2012 conference that while the effects of scarce resources are becoming more visible, "we are nowhere near realizing the full impact of this yet." Among the issues discussed were waste and inefficiency in the developed world, and the slow response to changing realities. The Rio+20 summit was credited for taking steps to combat hunger and make agriculture more sustainable. The Guardian (London) (7/12) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Dalai Lama speaks as Tibet self-immolations persist
A man who set himself on fire this week in protest of Chinese rule in Tibet was the 43rd to do so since 2009. The Dalai Lama called on China to better investigate the reasons for the self-immolations and to "not pretend that nothing is wrong," but declined to comment further on what he said was a "very, very delicate" situation: "If I say something negative, then the family members of those people feel very sad. They sacrificed their life. ... If I say something positive, then the Chinese immediately blame me."
