Girl Child (short video)

The World Movement for Democracy is delighted to announce the release of a new video produced as part of the Civic Space InitiativeGirl Child tells the story of Glanis Changachirere - a Zimbabwean women's rights activist who successfully overcame intense political and economic obstacles to help young women in her small village "create a life of their own choosing."

We hope you watch this short inspirational video and share it with your networks! Glanis made an opening presentation at our Seventh Assembly last October, and Girl Child provides a wonderful example of how a democracy activist can make a difference.

DemocracyAlert: Vietnamese Human Rights Defender to go on Trial

On June 17, 2013, the World Movement for Democracy joined a broad coalition of NGOs in sending a letter to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to pressure the Vietnamese government to free human rights defender Le Quoc Quan. The World Movement issued a previous alert following his arrest in December for "tax evasion." NGOs following the case believe that Mr. Quan has been arbitrarily detained due to his human rights work. The coalition has also sent a Letter of Allegation to UN Special Rapporteurs, requesting that they "investigate and intervene in his unlawful arrest and detention," and to "declare continuing detention of Mr. Quan a violation of his human rights." His trial is set for July 9, 2013. Read the full alert.

LGBT Rights Dropped in new Peruvian National Human Rights Plan
The Homosexual Movement of Lima (MHOL) recently held a press conference in protest of omission of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights in the new Peruvian National Human Rights Plan. According to MHOL, articles that would protect individuals from discrimination and from being victims of crimes related to sexual orientation or gender were removed from the draft of the Human Rights Plan because they were considered "controversial." In response, MHOL issued letters to the United Nations, Inter-American Commission of Human Rights, and the European Parliament accusing the government of Peru of discrimination against LGBT citizens.

The World Movement presented one of its Democracy Courage Tributes to the Advocates for the Rights of Sexual Minorities Worldwide at its Seventh Assembly, held in Peru in October 2012. The representative of MHOL, Ms. Veronica Ferrari, accepted the Tributes on behalf of the global LGBT rights movement. Read More. (in Spanish)
