Africans see opportunity to finally tackle climate change
Sentiment has changed worldwide since the Kyoto Protocol, which could help participants reach agreement on a climate-change pact, say African climate negotiators attending the U.S.-African summit. They also see opportunity for compromise on whether developed or developing countries are chiefly responsible for cutting emissions. "We in Africa are hoping to find language that can address the same concerns but is appealing to each party," says Tanzania negotiator Richard Muyungi. Reuters (8/6)

Resolving gender inequities is crucial for development
The Millennium Development Goals are a success story in many ways, including how they have helped reduce poverty and improve access to clean water, writes Diana Ohlbaum. Resolving gender inequality, however, requires more effort, she writes. "Until these underlying inequities are addressed, effective development will continue to prove elusive," she argues.
