Satellites to be used to monitor Sudan for atrocities

A special project that will use satellites to monitor Sudan for potential war crimes was slated to begin today, only days before the Jan. 9 referendum that could break up Sudan into northern and southern countries. Actor George Clooney helped launch and fund the project. Reuters (12/29)

  • UN convoy attacked in Cote d'Ivoire
A mob in an Abidjan neighborhood supportive of incumbent Cote d'Ivoire President Laurent Gbagbo attacked a United Nations convoy Tuesday, wounding one UN peacekeeper and setting fire to a vehicle. Gbagbo has been critical of the UN and foreign governments for their persistence in urging Gbagbo to concede defeat in Cote d'Ivoire's recent elections. • No end in sight to Pakistan's financial woes
As Pakistan grapples with a massive budget deficit, loan repayment issues and the need for billions to rebuild after 2010's devastating floods, international willingness to bail the country out is wearing thin. Foreign governments and international lenders, such as the International Monetary Fund, have repeatedly chastised Pakistani authorities for poor financial management in recent years and Islamabad's failure to meet the conditions of existing loans may restrict future financial assistance. Critics of the Hungarian government charge a new law that will adversely affect press freedom is part of a trend toward autocracy on the part of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government. The law has sparked protests and threats of sanctions from the European Union, for which Hungary is due to assume the rotating presidency on Jan. 1. Current Western policies toward Iran are hostile, and likely to impede the progress of ongoing talks over the nature and scope of the country's nuclear program, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday. Another round of discussions between Iran and the permanent members of the UN Security Council, including Germany, is slated for late January in Istanbul. • West Africans to resume talks in bid to end Cote d'Ivoire crisis
Negotiations were slated to resume next week in Cote d'Ivoire in a bid to convince President Laurent Gbagbo to end an increasingly violent impasse by relinquishing power to Alassane Ouattara, who is seen widely as the victor of last month's presidential election. The regional Economic Community Of West African States has threatened to remove Gbagbo by force. BBC (12/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Europe's anarchists working together?
Social tension brought on by financial woes may be driving the resurgence of anarchist groups across Europe -- which have claimed responsibility for bombings in Italy and Greece recently -- after decades of relatively little public activity.
