| - UN Assembly to vote on weakened Syria resolution
The United Nations General Assembly is slated to vote today on a resolution condemning the Security Council for failing to take meaningful action in Syria. The language of the resolution was watered down overnight -- removing calls for regime change and sanctions -- because resistance by some countries meant the 100-vote threshold in the 193-member body might not be met. French Ambassador Gerard Araud said the Security Council was unlikely to renew the mandate of the UN observer mission, which expires Aug. 19. The failure last week of the United Nations to agree upon a treaty to regulate the global trade in conventional weapons has its benefits, according to observers. Negotiations were postponed at the behest of the U.S. and other nations, "the extra time does give us the opportunity to fix up problems in the treaty ... and we may even be able to move ammunition into the 'scope,' " said Roy Isbister of Saferworld, a nongovernmental organization trying to reduce armed conflict. IRINNews.org (8/3) - Bangladesh said to halt aid to Rohingya refugees
Authorities in Bangladesh reportedly have ordered aid agencies to shut down operations that assist Rohingya refugees amid concerns that the services were merely attracting more such refugees from Myanmar. A report published by Human Rights Watch says that Myanmar failed to protect the stateless Muslims from arson and machete attacks by Rakhinese after the rape and murder of a Rakhine woman in May by three Rohingya males. The young teenage daughters of Syrian refugees in Jordan are increasingly being married to older Syrian men -- against the laws of both countries -- as a form of financial and other security against a backdrop of conflict and instability. "We're concerned about early marriages -- using that as a coping mechanism," said Dominique Hyde, a representative in Jordan for the United Nations Children's Fund. IRINNews.org (7/19) - Mexican town gains autonomy amid logging fight
Residents of a mountain town in the Mexican state of Michoacán are fighting back against illegal loggers backed by criminal syndicates by closing roads, ejecting police and politicians, abducting loggers and taking up arms -- sometimes with weapons as feeble as rocks and fireworks -- against paramilitaries armed with AK-47s. Nearly three-fourths of the surrounding oak forests have been decimated by loggers.
