General Assembly to discuss Syria, could criticize Security Council

On Thursday, the United Nations General Assembly is poised to coalesce around the ongoing violence in Syria -- and possibly pass a resolution critical of the Security Council. A resolution drafted by Saudi Arabia criticizes the more powerful body for inaction as tens of thousands continued to flee fighting in Aleppo. The government was using fighter jets and other organized military elements to put down an armed revolt in a battle President Bashar Assad said would decide the fate of the country. UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos is seeking a safe zone for the delivery of aid. • Peacekeepers to remain in Darfur, help find Kony
The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday extended the peacekeeping mandate in the Darfur region of Sudan by another year. The move reduces the number of UN-African Union military and police personnel but empowers them to cooperate in the hunt for Joseph Kony, the Ugandan warlord and head of the Lord's Resistance Army. Observers give the five-year-old mission mixed grades. Reuters (7/31), Deutsche Welle (Germany) (7/31) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The reliance of India on coal to power 70% of its energy needs is partly responsible for the blackouts that affected half of the country's 1.2 billion people, as well as the sweeping devastation to the environment.
