Child deaths from malaria fall 51% since 2000, WHO report says
The number of children under the age of 5 dying from malaria dropped by 51% from 2000 to 2012, says the annual report on malaria from the World Health Organization. WHO expects the death rate will continue to fall, which bodes well for helping countries meet health-related Millennium Development Goals. Still, lack of funding and the emergence of drug-resistant malaria concern health officials. "With the Sochi Olympics coming up in February, there are still concerns from the LGBT athletes and those who support equal rights about their rightful place in the Games. It seems to many as a slap in the face of the very spirit of the Olympic games, one of unity and a chance for a truly inclusive, global event." UN Dispatch (12/11)

Report: Cancer deaths expected to keep rising in poorer countries
The number of new global cancer cases rose in 2012 to 14.1 million, up from 12.7 million in 2008, says the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer. The IARC expects new cases to increase to 19.3 million by 2025. Poorer countries tend to have higher death rates than wealthy ones due to lack of diagnostics and treatment options, while the rates of new diagnoses are higher in more developed nations. At its 50th anniversary, Kenya needs lasting solutions to poverty
Kenya is celebrating its 50th year of independence today. The country has much to be proud about and much to do to close the gap between rich and poor, Catholic Bishop Anthony Muheria writes. People in rural areas still struggle for basic services, food and clean water. "Our anniversary celebrations should propel us to find lasting solutions to this kind of poverty," Muheria argues. Relaunched Panama forest program provides lessons for other efforts, UN-REDD says
The United Nations' Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation program has reopened in Panama after its shutdown this year due to objections from native groups. An independent investigation found that indigenous people need to be included in decisions made regarding forest protection. UN-REDD will be applying lessons learned in Panama to other global projects. Thomson Reuters Foundation (12/12)
