The Wilson Center Looks Back at 2013

Dear Colleague,

As the new year approaches, The Wilson Center looks back at the issues, people, and events that dominated 2013.

AFRICA

Nelson Mandela

2013 witnessed several key elections on the continent, Obama’s new Power Africa Initiative, and the death of legendary leader Nelson Mandela.

ASIA

Politburo

China set its domestic policy for the next decade during the Third Plenum of the 18th Party Congress, Pakistan made the transition from one civilian government to another for the first time, while North Korea provokes with bellicose rhetoric, nuclear missile testing, and a high-level execution.

ENERGY

Keystone XL Pipeline

2013 highlighted vulnerabilities in the North American power grid and energy infrastructure while in Mexico,  landmark reforms of the country’s oil sector changed the North American energy landscape.

LATIN AMERICA

Maduro

Latin America saw the death of charismatic figure Hugo Chavez, new presidents in Venezuela and Honduras, oil reform in Mexico, and protests in the streets of Sao Paulo.

MIDDLE EAST

Assad Poster Ripped Down

In the third year of the Arab Spring, Egypt had a second revolution, Syria’s civil war raged on, and Iran began a new chapter with a new president and nuclear negotiations. Meanwhile the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks were revived.

NSA SURVEILLANCE

Pro-Snowden Protestors

Edward Snowden’s leaks of NSA’s surveillance left the U.S. government reeling, and raised a public debate about the balance between privacy and security. Further revelations of NSA snooping on European leaders drives a wedge between the U.S. and Europe.

RUSSIA

Ukraine Protests

Vladimir Putin stayed in the limelight by providing a safe haven for Edward Snowden, an out for Obama on a Syria strike, a bail-out deal for Ukraine, and pardons for many controversial prisoners prior to Sochi. Meanwhile, protesters took to the streets in Kyiv.

BEST BOOKS OF 2013

Best Books of 2013

The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Economist have recently published their lists of Best Books of 2013, and we are delighted to see that Wilson Center authors rank high on all the lists. Several of our scholars are included based on projects they were working on during their time here.
