Strangers into Citizens seeks to build awareness on what everyday life is like for irregular migrants. We have built the campaign around their stories. This week we share the story of the Birhanu family. The Birhanu family are originally from Ethiopia and their story illustrates how fear of deportation rules over the wellbeing of children.

| | Strangers into Citizens welcomes MPs to Parliament
 MPs arriving at Parliament at Westminster tube over the next month have a daily reminder of the Strangers into Citizens campaign in the shape of bright orange "paddles" at the ticket barriers.
The paddles, advertising the Strangers into Citizens logo, will remain in place until tour historic gathering in Trafalgar Square on 4 May.

You can say how you became involved in the campaign, why you support it, how it has changed the life of your community. This would be a good way of letting people know that ordinary citizens care about the issue of irregular migration!

Latin Assembly with Jennette Arnold, Chair of the London Assembly. The Iberian and South-Central American community will receive Mrs. Arnold, the most important London authority born in South-Central America. We are expecting more than 1,000 people. In the last 12 months we had assemblies with the Mayoral candidates, GLA members from all parties, one with the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and one with the Deputy Chair of the GLA Darren Johnson. Tens of thousands of people are expecting to participate in the largest demonstration to support the right of 700,000+ irregular immigrants to have a path towards citizenship. For the first time most religious congregations would have simultaneous services. The festival is being organised by Strangers into Citizens. The Iberian American community would depart at 11:00 from the Fusion Centre (22 Elephant and Castle, SE1). The Iberian American Catholics would gather at Westminster Cathedral. Thursday 7 May Latin Assembly with David Lammy, minister of state for innovations, skills and universities. Lammy is the patron of the Tottenham Carnival and the Carnaval Latino and also the only minister with South American ancestry. Venue: Bolívar Hall. 54 Grafton Way W1 5DL. Near Warren Street tube. 7:00 pm The Alliance of Iberian Americans in UK is an umbrella organisation that is attempting to unite all the 1 million Spanish and Portuguese speakers in the UK. Con afecto Flor Deliot Matemático, filósofo, humanista y educador, Germán Zabala Cubillos nos ha dejado "Nos olvidamos de preparar un ser para ser él, que supiera que lo fundamental que hay en este mundo es su existencia; que no hay nada, ni ahora, ni antes, que lo pueda sustituir. Que lo importante de vivir está en su especificidad, el deber que tiene cada persona de participar con su diferencia, en el proceso social de la comunidad.." German Zabala Cubillos. "La paradoja de la diferencia". El jueves 9 de abril de 2009 falleció en Bogotá el maestro e intelectual Germán Zabala Cubillos. Nació en Bogotá en 1926 en una familia de educadores, lo que marcó su camino a lo largo de toda su vida. Junto con sus hermanos y su esposa, impulsó la educación física en todo el país, desarrollando campeonatos de básquet-ball y promoviendo el deporte en la educación secundaria. Inició su carrera de Matemático orientado por el profesor Carlo Federici, fundador de la carrera de Matemáticas de la Universidad Nacional, un italiano de ideas avanzadas que llegó al país en 1948. Co-fundador de las universidades Incca y América en Colombia, Germán recibió numerosas distinciones por su trayectoria científica y de colaboración solidaria en varios países: Chile, Nicaragua, México, Perú y Venezuela. Dentro de estas distinciones, fue invitado a la Universidad de la Sorbona para profundizar sus investigaciones sobre Topología Matemática. Profesor universitario, ilustre académico y conferencista, colaboró con artículos científicos y políticos en numerosas publicaciones nacionales e internacionales, se recuerdan entre otros sus aportes filosóficos sobre el impacto de la cibernética y de las nuevas tecnologías informáticas en la sociedad. Su último libro en 2004: "Ética, la paradoja de la diferencia". Germán fue militante de movimientos políticos de izquierda en Colombia, Chile, Nicaragua y México. En su juventud participó en la fundación del Partido Socialita Democrático, más adelante acompañó al sacerdote Camilo Torres Restrepo en el Frente Unido y luego colaboró con Golgonda, corriente de sacerdotes y cristianos inspirada en la "Teología de la Liberación" e influida por la doctrina social de Pablo VI. En Chile se vincula al equipo del Presidente Allende en el gobierno de la "Unidad Popular", en Nicaragua se compromete con la revolución sandinista al lado de la red educativa, y en México promueve el debate sobre la necesidad de reformular el pensamiento revolucionario desde una práctica científica y social latinoamericana. De regreso a Colombia adelanta investigaciones en la búsqueda de un modelo de gestión productiva y de desarrollo sostenible y en las tesis de las estructuras matemáticas y lo social.
En marzo del presente año se inauguró en la Universidad de Cundinamarca la cátedra "Germán Zabala Cubillos" en la que Tila Uribe hizo la presentación de su obra. Un perfil de su vida se encuentra en la revista "Nómadas" (http://www.ucentral.edu.co/NOMADAS/nunme-ante/26-30/29/11-VLADIMIR.pdf).
A su esposa Yolanda, a sus hijos César, Vladimir y Michel, a sus hermanos Jaime, Jorge y Manuel, y a su familia y allegados, expresamos nuestros sentimientos de amistad y solidaridad, recordando con gran admiración y cariño la vida y obra de este matemático, filosofo, humanista, educador internacionalista y militante político colombiano.
