LATINOS TO RALLY IN SUPPORT OF IMMIGRATION REFORM

When: Friday, May1, 2009

Where: Northwest Corner of Liberty Park
900 South 500 East, Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, UT –Utah Latinos and supporters will hold a rally at Liberty Park on May 1, 2009. This event is being held in coordination with a national movement to hold marches and rallies in support of comprehensive immigration reform. The rally is intended to send a message to President Barack Obama that Utahns favor a humane and comprehensive immigration reform. President Obama has expressed publicly that he will introduce an immigration reform to Congress later this year.

In recent days, much of the talk has been on the implementation of SB81 and how it will impact the Latino community. We believe that should SB81 be implemented it will impact every community in Utah. Children of immigrants are especially vulnerable, as two-thirds of the children living with unauthorized parents are U.S. citizens.

Immigrants to Utah are not only our neighbors, co-workers, and fellow church-goers and students but they also represent a large and important part of our local economy. As consumers they shop for food, clothing and household goods, pay for phones, gas and utilities, rent apartments, buy homes, and purchase cars. As Utah workers they build homes, offices and churches, process meat, turkey and dairy products, pick peaches, apples, onions and other produce, and work in nearly every restaurant and hotel in our state. This event is to promote "Dignity and respect for all."
