MY FIGHT WITH THYROID CANCER
July 9, 2009
Four years ago I was diagnosed with papillary Thyroid cancer (right side neck) and on August 15, 2005 I underwent surgery at Huntsman Cancer Hospital (HCH). Since then, faithfully, I have been seeing my doctors at HCH and at the University of Utah Hospital for follow-ups. Over the past year or so there has been an increase concern that my cancer may be coming back and as such I have been doing everything my Doctors have asked me to do.
On Tuesday June 30 while on a six month visit my Doctor reviewed all the tests decided that it's time go back to the operation room because the cancer has come back, this time on my left side (neck). My doctor was concerned that my antibodies have not decreased over the past six months it has remained very very high. As such, surgery is scheduled for next Monday, July 13, 2009. My doctors are optimistic that they will take care of the remaining cancer left and let me say that I am so glad that we have such a great institution in our backyard.
Given the recent events of the implementation of SB81 it would be hard for me to go unnoticed without someone in the community asking where I am. As a matter of fact, a few weeks ago while I was on vacation, many questioned where I was. Several Latinos called worried that they had not read my columns on "El Estandar" and that I was not on my weekly radio program "Pulso Latino" on Exitos 1550 AM. In fairness to each of you I felt compelled to let you know more about my personal challenges with Thyroid Cancer. Besides, you would be bored if you didn't get an email from me.
For the next few weeks I will be resting and getting stronger. As time permits I will update my website (www.utahlatinos.
I am just an ordinary human being who happens to have a decease that will not go away. Life is too wonderful to give up a fight. My foes would like nothing better than for me to be quite and say nothing ever again. Let me say this. The only time I will be quite is while I am on the operating table. As soon as I wake up, I will be asking what happened in our community while I was out.
I decided to share my personal story with you because you are my extended family (personal and professional) besides it's better to get information right from the source than get it from third parties. Our lives would not be complete if we didn't face challenges for some of us it's family, work (these days), health and immigration status for many and others. I appreciate each of you for all that you do and never forget that there are so many Latinos who could use our help all the time. Serving others is the best way to make a difference.
Thank you to each of you for your continue support, association and friendship.
God Bless you!
Tu amigo de siempre,
Tony Yapias
