[RED DEMOCRATICA] Coments.: Letter to AG Holder From Rights Working Group

Estimados compatriotas:
Humildemente,

ACTION ALERT

Dear Colleagues,

In April we delivered 5,000 signatures from individuals around the nation asking the Department of Justice to revise their June 2003 Guidance Regarding the Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agencies. These signatures made the DOJ sit up and take note. Since then AZ passed SB 1070 and 10 states are set to follow suit. Now more than ever, we need to pressure the DOJ to take action, and hold law enforcement accountable for all forms of racial and religious profiling.

We are asking organizations (not individuals) to sign on to a letter to Attorney General Holder asking the DOJ to reform their June 2003 Guidance Regarding the Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.  The deadline to sign on is July 12.

 Take Action

Problem

We constantly hear about horrific tragedies resulting from racial profiling. Everyday a new story surfaces of a community member facing the humiliation of being racially profiled. The Obama Administration has said they support efforts to stop racial profiling, yet they have made little progress.
After 9-11, thousands of people were profiled, detained and deported. Families lost their caretakers. And communities lost their leaders. As a nation we responded in 2003 with the Department of Justice Guidance Regarding the Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agencies. But the Guidance had no accountability measures and included significant loopholes.
In the last few months, we have seen Arizona maneuver around the DOJ Guidance in order to legally profile people based on perceived national origin. And recently released data suggests rampant racial profiling by New York City Police Department (NYPD).
It is time to close the loopholes. The DOJ must strengthen the June 2003 Guidance to hold law enforcement accountable for all forms of racial and religious profiling.

Solution

Add your organization as a signatory to a coalition letter asking Attorney General Holder to strengthen the 2003 Guidance on racial profiling so that it:
  • includes profiling based on religion and national origin;
  • closes loopholes that allow profiling at borders in the name of "national security";
  • ensures that the guidelines are enforceable and that law enforcement agencies are held accountable; and
  • applies to state or local law enforcement agencies working in cooperation with federal agencies or receiving federal money.
