Letter Writing Campaign:

LDS Church should take an official stand on Immigration

Salt Lake City, UT – For the past several weeks Utah Latinos and around the country have increasingly become concerned about how the immigration debate has taken a turn on Legislators who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints.  These legislators including Representative Stephen Sandstrom (R-Orem) and Arizona State Senator, Russell Pearce (R-Meza) have become the most ardent proponents of anti-immigration laws in Utah and Arizona.  Despite the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints best efforts to say "Church leaders have urged compassion and careful reflection when addressing immigration issues affecting millions of people."

To this effort a "letter writing campaign" to Thomas S. Monson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will begin today. The LDS Church has not taken an "official position" on the immigration issue. We believe that as a result of the LDS Church not having an official position it will continue to increase the racial tensions and discrimination.

Tony Yapias with Proyecto Latino de Utah has written an open letter to President Thomas S. Monson to take an official position on immigration. This letter is being published on El Estandar Spanish newspaper in Utah. www.standard.net/topics/el-estandar or www.tyapias.blogspot.com Yapias said "The LDS Church has continually asked its members to be compassionate when dealing with immigration issues but few are listening." In the past, President Gordon B. Hinckley denounced racism in the church.  Elder Marlin K. Jensen, declared immigration to be a moral issue. Despite of these warnings and unless it comes directly from President Monson some members will continue to ignore such callings.

The letter writing campaign will begin today at noon on the "Pulso Latino" Radio show on 1550 AM www.exitos1550.com at noon (listen live on the internet).  Listeners will be asked to write letters to President Thomas S. Monson asking him to take an official position on immigration as most other religion organizations around the country have including the Catholic Church. As part of this "letter writing campaign", listeners will be asked to share their personal stories and how the debate over immigration is impacting them personally and their families. LDS members and non-members will be asked to write letters.
