Ivorian leader is facing UN sanctions on assets, travel

The UN Security Council on Wednesday voted unanimously to impose far-reaching sanctions against Cote d'Ivoire incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo in an effort to pressure the recalcitrant leader to step down several months after losing a nationwide poll. The sanctions -- which apply to Gbagbo's relatives, as well as high-ranking figures in his government -- freeze assets and ban travel. Reuters (3/30) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"Gbagbo and his forces are responsible for all sorts of human rights violations. That includes this massacre of women staging a peaceful protest three weeks ago; firing artillery shells into a crowded market last week; and repeated attacks on the United Nations."

  • Study reveals jet vapor as contributor to global warming
A study by the DLR German Aerospace Center shows that vapor left behind by jet engines on a normal day accounts for more carbon dioxide than that which has accumulated since the start of aviation more than a century ago. The jet contrails also help form cirrus clouds, which trap heat and further contribute to global warming -- a factor that might potentially lead to government-imposed penalties designed to slow climate change.
