TIME:            9:00 am to 10:30 am

Salt Lake City, UT – American Mental Health Counselors Association [AMHCA] and Utah Mental Health Counselors Association [UMHCA] will be holding their annual conference beginning today Friday 25th and tomorrow Saturday, March 26th here in Salt Lake City at the Holiday Inn Express (4465 Century Drive).

This year's keynote speaker will be Tony Yapias, Former Director of Hispanic Affairs for the State of Utah and Immigrant Advocate. Paul Carver, Conference Coordinator said "Mr. Yapias unique personal experience in working with the Latino community will be a valuable asset to Mental Health Counselors as they are finding new ways to attract and offer treatment to  a disenfranchised population."

Conference participants will learn how current State immigration legislation has been impacting the Latino community. Today, there are more than 360,000 Latinos living in Utah. Mr. Yapias will address the challenges of adapting to a new environment, language, culture and the separation from their families and how it can all this lead to depression. Latinos find it difficult to talk about mental health issues or seek professional help due to the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Latinos are at a greater risk of being depressed, anxiety or substance abuse.

As the Latino population grows it posses a unique challenge to Mental Health Counselors, how to best serve and reach out an underserved population.

Other events at the annual conference include:

  • Silent Auction Dinner, Friday evening [03/25] from 6:30 until 10:30. The purpose is to raise funds for the UMHCA student organization, Dean Workman Scholarship Fund. The cost is 20.00 and it is open to the public.
