What every clinic needs for mothers and children

The World Health Organization released its list of drugs and vitamins that should be stocked by every health care provider to ensure maternal and child health in the developing world. Oxytocin, saline solution, calcium gluconate, zinc and vitamin A are among the top 30 medicines that can improve maternal and child health, WHO says. More than 8 million children under 5 years of age die annually and 1,000 pregnant women a day die from largely treatable conditions, and availability of the drugs, according to WHO, would drastically improve the numbers. • Libyan rebels may sell oil under UN sanctions
The sanctions committee of the UN Security Council does not need to give special permission for anti-government rebels in Libya to export oil for sale, whereas Libyan government entities and firms tied to Moammar Ghadafi are prohibited under sanctions from such trade. "The rebels can sell oil. But they can't do it through the Libyan National Oil Corporation," one diplomat said. Reuters (3/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Israel tries to head off UN vote on Palestinian state
Diplomats at several dozen Israeli embassies last week lodged protests with other governments over a planned UN General Assembly vote about whether to grant recognition to a Palestinian state. It's not clear how the government of Israel would respond, but reportedly there is pressure building toward the September vote in part because U.S. President Barack Obama urged the creation of a Palestinian state within a year in his speech to the UN General Assembly in September 2010. • Online tools can speed disaster response
Real-time mapping by volunteer sources through technology has proved its value in disaster-response efforts in Haiti, Pakistan and Japan -- providing almost immediate information on need within affected areas. Volunteer network OpenStreetMap created detailed working maps of Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake. Haitians trained by the OpenStreetMap community have used the knowledge to help create maps for Japan. The Guardian (London)/Poverty Matters Blog (3/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Technology and humanitarian crisis
Technology, access to it and the development of new applications is changing the way the word responds to natural disaster and humanitarian crises, writes Adele Waugaman, head of the technology partnership run jointly by the UN Foundation and the Vodafone Foundation. The tools allow individuals not directly involved into humanitarian efforts to become immediate sources of information, and the UN Foundation partnership has released a report examining how to leverage the trends to improve disaster response. • Swift TB diagnostic test is introduced in South Africa
Among the latest technological developments in the fight against tuberculosis is a two-hour, computer-based test that cuts by three weeks the waiting period for results regarding possible infection by either TB or drug-resistant TB. The testing procedure, which costs about $20 and is said to be more accurate than current procedures, recently was introduced in South Africa. Moammar Gadhafi's forces are fighting back against rebels, forcing them to retreat from gains of the past few days under a barrage of tank fire. • Fighting escalates in Cote d'Ivoire
Armed forces supporting Alassane Ouattara, the widely recognized president-elect of Cote d'Ivoire who has been denied office by long-standing President Laurent Gbagbo, are attempting to seal the country's western border with Liberia in a bid to stop what they say is the recruitment by Gbagbo of foreign fighters. Heavy clashes were reported in the country's north, too, between former rebels now supporting Ouattara and forces loyal to Gbagbo. BBC (3/28), Reuters (3/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
