Window is closing to save lives in Sahel, UN warns

An estimated $725 million will be needed in 2012 to pay for "urgent" assistance to save lives and stave off conflict in the drought-stricken Sahel region of West Africa, according to aid officials from the United Nations and European Union. "We have a short time to act," said Jose Graziano da Silva, director of the Food and Agriculture Organization. "We have two or three months. No more than that." "It's been exactly one year since #Feb14 became the online rallying cry for the uprising in Bahrain. Thousands gathered in Manama's Pearl Roundabout to protest a political system ruled by the same monarchy for hundreds of years."

  • General Assembly is poised for Syria vote
The UN General Assembly is poised on Thursday to debate and vote on an Arab-sponsored resolution intended to help stem the bloodshed in Syria as government forces expanded a tank offensive to the city of Hama, and security forces raided homes and made arrests in a neighborhood of Damascus. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said the UN should weigh the designation of "humanitarian corridors" to allow aid agencies to reach people trapped by the increasing violence. • UN demands access to civilians in Sudan conflict zones
The Sudanese government and anti-Khartoum rebels must allow United Nations personnel free access to areas bordering South Sudan to deliver supplies and equipment to civilians trapped by ongoing conflict, and to assess their needs, the UN Security Council said Tuesday in a statement. The council said malnutrition "could reach emergency levels if not immediately addressed." Reuters (2/15) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • UN: Clock is ticking on Camp Ashraf refugees in Iraq
Time is running out in Iraq on plans to relocate the approximately 3,400 residents of Camp Ashraf, mostly members of an Iranian opposition group, writes Martin Kobler, special representative of the UN secretary-general for Iraq. "We support only a peaceful, humanitarian solution ... that both respects Iraq's sovereignty and provides the people of Camp Ashraf with a safe and voluntary path to a more hopeful life outside of Iraq." • Survey charts rise in child malnutrition
Skyrocketing food prices have made milk, vegetables and meat out of reach for families in India, Bangladesh, Peru, Pakistan and Nigeria, putting 500 million children at risk of malnutrition that will stunt their physical and mental growth over the next 15 years, according to a survey by the international charity Save the Children. The report states that malnutrition is a contributing factor in the deaths of 2.6 million children every year. BBC (2/15), The Guardian (London) (2/14) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Subsidies help girls avoid HIV, other STDs
Small cash subsidies given to young women have helped prevent infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases because those women were not as prone to have sexual relations with older men to overcome financial hardship, according to a study conducted by the World Bank and others. Those among the 1,300 school-age girls in southern Malawi who received money were not only more likely to stay in school, but less than half as likely to have HIV as those who had not been paid. The International Atomic Energy Agency has made rare diplomatic overtures to Iran in a bid to set a tone of good will in advance of talks next week over the country's controversial nuclear enrichment program. Today, Iranian state television reported nuclear advances, including the development of "fourth generation" centrifuges and reactor fuel plates. • Surge in Sinai crime has roots in Bedouin neglect
Armed Bedouin gangs are reportedly behind the recent string of kidnappings and armed robberies of tourists and resorts in the southern Sinai, contributing to the climate of lawlessness and anarchy that has swept the peninsula since the Egyptian revolution last year. Crime is even more serious in the north, reflecting, in part, decades of poverty and under-investment in education, health and transport.
