Environmental officials reach deals at Clean Energy Ministerial

A group of energy and environment ministers from 22 countries and the European Union reached many agreements on energy efficiency at the Clean Energy Ministerial meetings last week. Commitments included agreements to share technology, to finance a competition to develop low-energy televisions and to bring energy-efficient lighting to 2 million people in India by the end of 2015. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in a historic address to Myanmar's fledgling parliament, praised the country's democratic reforms and asked Western powers to remove or suspend sanctions. Prior to Ban's speech Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and members of her pro-democracy party ended a boycott of the legislative body over a clause in the oath of office, and President Thein Sein was pushing for a breakthrough in peace talks with ethnic rebel militias. Some $500 million in U.S. funds intended to fight AIDS in Kenya are lingering, unspent, and activists want the money released to help treat the 1.5 million Kenyans infected with the virus with antiretroviral drugs. "It's a tragedy that money goes unused while Kenyans with HIV get sick and die because they don't receive treatment," said Jacque Wambui of the Kenyan branch of the Health Global Access Project.
