[RED DEMOCRATICA] FW: Not stopping

Take Action Now!

Friend --

Last week, I had the privilege of representing America’s Voice Education Fund-- alongside Renata Soto of the National Council of La Raza and Fred Redmond of the United Steel Workers and the AFL-CIO -- at the Daimler AG shareholder meeting in Berlin, Germany.

Renata spoke on behalf of our delegation, bringing our message powerfully to the shareholders and the Daimler managing board. When she asked if they would abide by their own corporate principles and call for the repeal of HB 56, Renata got perhaps the loudest applause of the day from the 6,000 shareholders in the room!

Daimler responded, offering their first public comment on HB 56 since the law passed. (They didn’t say anything about the law last year, even when one of their German Mercedes-Benz executives was arrested in Alabama for not having his papers on him.)

Daimler didn’t commit to calling for repeal, but they did say they’re in conversations with the Alabama business community and with US Congressional representatives about the law and waiting for “progress on these discussions.” (Read: they’re worried about the law, too.)

This was an important first step toward getting Mercedes-Benz involved in the fight to repeal HB 56. But we need to keep the pressure on so that Daimler, Hyundai and Honda all take a stand on the Alabama law.

Stay tuned and thanks so much for your support,

Patty Kupfer

PS. The group Faith Leaders for a Welcoming Alabama just launched the first TV ad ever about HB 56, so if you have not seen it yet, watch the TV ad here.

Friend --

As legislators in Alabama gear up to announce changes to H.B. 56, we must increase the pressure on the architects of this hateful law to do the right thing.  Word is that they are interested in only making “tweaks” to the law, but clearly we need more than tweaks.

Mercedes-Benz has a huge manufacturing plant in Alabama and the company touts its commitment to human and civil rights around the globe.  But despite its political power in Alabama, they have done nothing to stop H.B. 56.

That’s why I’m going to Berlin, Germany today.

Late last month, Adam joined civil, human rights, and labor leaders, pressuring Hyundai in Korea to end its silence on H.B. 56. This week, I will join leaders from the AFL-CIO and the National Council of La Raza to make similar demands from Mercedes-Benz at their annual shareholders' meeting in Germany.

But before the delegation goes in to the Mercedes-Benz shareholders' meeting on Wednesday, can you tell them that they have a responsibility to put the brakes on hate?

Mercedes-Benz, like Honda and Hyundai, has major operations in Alabama. A few months ago, one of Mercedes-Benz’s German executives was even arrested under H.B. 56 for not carrying his documents. Alabama’s Governor quickly acted to have the executive released, but the company has done nothing about the widespread suffering of others.  These car companies, who expect us to buy their cars, need to hear that they have a responsibility to speak out against H.B. 56.

If we can make Mercedes-Benz feel the grassroots pressure before the delegation even walks into the room, we could really make a difference!
