Indian firm's cheap vaccine could "revolutionize" polio battle

An India-based pharmaceuticals company that supplies vaccines to two-thirds of children worldwide will add the injectable form of the polio vaccine to the oral drops it offers. The change is a potential game-changer in the battle to eradicate the disease. The shots from the Serum Institute of India would cost 93 cents, or less than one-third that of the largest suppliers of the injectable vaccine. • Reports: Indian women take on own defense
Since a high-profile rape last month in India's capital, New Delhi, some women have been enrolling in self-defense classes, carrying pepper spray and traveling in private taxis driven by women. The city's police departments are widely seen as understaffed and insensitive to the concerns of women, this article says. Reuters (1/22) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

President Barack Obama used a portion of his inaugural address to reaffirm his commitment to renewable energy. The shift toward low-carbon energy sources is "long and sometimes difficult," but the country must push on, Obama said. "America cannot resist this transition; we must lead it. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries; we must claim its promise," he said. Platts (1/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
