Solving climate change from the top down and bottom up

The World Economic Forum in Davos has released multiple reports highlighting the need to address climate change. While Davos, United Nations conferences and similar events can set the agenda, they need to be complemented by "bottom up" strategies, says Richard Samans of the Global Green Growth Institute. "What I'm talking about as a bottom-up response is having specific sectors meet performance standards where it makes the most difference, like power plants. Or do things with land use that sucks carbon out of the atmosphere," he says. "One concrete way to fulfill our basic moral obligations to the Syrian people without falling into the trap of military intervention is to bring a big checkbook to Kuwait on Wednesday when international donors meet for the International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria."

  • Child trafficking happens in U.S., too, Harmon says
Lighting the UNICEF snowflake on Fifth Avenue in New York City sparked actress Angie Harmon's interest in the agency, and a visit to its website showed her how people are exploited to make the products she uses daily. "I was just awed and amazed and desperately wanted to be a part of it," said Harmon, a UNICEF ambassador to combat child trafficking. "We all know child trafficking is out there and children are sold into prostitution and labor and they work in grueling conditions. I think we've all become accustomed to the idea that it happens elsewhere, but it happens here, too. All 50 states have reported it." FoxNews.com (1/24) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
