Poll: Americans say U.S. support for the UN, its agencies is important

About 80% of Americans surveyed support an active U.S. presence at the United Nations, according to polling by the Better World Campaign. UN agencies received strong backing, too, including 92% approval for the World Health Organization. Among other findings, as Mark Leon Goldberg notes, is that most of the respondents opposed spending cutbacks on international health programs. Read the news release. "This crackdown, apparently sanctioned at the highest levels of government, has serious implications both for Vietnamese human rights, and perhaps even for Vietnam's burgeoning economy -- which has propelled the Southeast Asian nation to a remarkable post-war recovery."

Recent gains against malaria in Africa, Asia and the Americas "can be lost if we don't keep up the momentum," says David Brandling-Bennett, deputy director of the malaria program at the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation. Vaccines that prevent infection in humans and mosquitoes are critical to the global effort to eradicate the disease, he says. AllAfrica Global Media (1/10) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Root of poverty is power and politics, says Oxfam chief
Departing Oxfam Great Britain chief Barbara Stocking, recently visited Bangladesh. She says the world is "sleepwalking into some horrible trap" with climate change, which is complicating anti-poverty efforts. "But it's hard to get across the message that it's us lot, who are actually using all the global goods, who need to change. Not poor people," she says. • Western failures behind Mali crisis
What's carries more blame for the crisis in Mali -- counterterrorism or a failure of Western democratization assistance? "Mali's civilian government, and its western supporters, had a decade to build institutions, civilian and military, that could counter both the appeal and the military might of the extremists. That task was hard enough, perhaps impossible. But it could have been tried much harder without loss of life, and without unraveling an entire region," Heather Hurlburt writes.
