Stakeholder Outreach Day in Bali: 6 March deadline

The fourth meeting of the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda will be held in Bali, Indonesia from 25-27 March 2013 and will include a full day of outreach events - Stakeholder Outreach Day - organized on 25 March. The CSO application process is now open to national, regional and global civil society organizations who want to participate in the outreach events and can be accessed from www.infid.org. The deadline for applications is 6 March 2013, 4.00 pm Jakarta Time (GMT+7).

The purpose of the Stakeholder Outreach Day is to enable substantive interactions of the Panel with civil society, the private sector, academic institutions, youth, parliamentarians and other elected representatives as well as global and regional governance institutions relevant to the dialogue on the post-2015 global development agenda.

First informal consultations on General Assembly\'s Special Event on MDG progress kicked off in New York

Inline A first round of informal consultations kicked off on 15 February in New York with Member States discussing their initial ideas on the modalities and substance of the United Nations General Assembly\'s Special Event to follow-up on efforts made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to be held in September 2013.

Deliberations on Sustainable Development Goals and the high-level political forum continue at UNHQ

InlineTwo key outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development ("Rio+20") - the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals and the next round of consultations on the high-level political forum - will move forward in March. Registered Major Groups are invited to provide comments on participation modalities with the OWG at the online Major Group Workspace launched by the Division on Sustainable Development of the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DSD/DESA).

Informational meetings held in preparation for the 2013 High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development

Inline The General Assembly will hold a High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development during its sixty-eighth session in 2013. In preparation for this event, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) organized a series of informational meetings.

World Day for Social Justice: there are still too many opportunities for a few and only rising inequality for the many

Inline On 20 February, World Day for Social Justice was observed at the United Nations and across the globe. In his message, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized that there are "far too many places where there are increasing opportunities for a few and only rising inequality for the many." As a result, millions of people are stuck in poverty-stricken situations. "Let us intensify our efforts to achieve a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable development path built on dialogue, transparency and social justice," the Secretary-General urged.

UN launches International Year of Quinoa, highlighting its role in food security and nutrition

Inline On 20 February, a High-level meeting was held at UN Headquarters in New York on the occasion of the global launch of the International Year of Quinoa. The event was organized by the Permanent Mission of the Plurinational State of Bolivia along with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI). FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva, First Lady of Peru Nadine Heredia, Ministers of Agriculture from Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, and representatives of civil society participated in the event as panellists.

Commission for Social Development concludes with the approval of five draft resolutions

InlineThe 51st Session of the UN Commission for Social Development (CSocD) concluded on 15 February with the approval of five draft resolutions, to be considered by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).Resolutions approved during the session covered ageing, disability, African development, and the participation of people in their own social development.

UN DESA holds Google+ Hangout to discuss key outcomes of Rio+20

InlineOn 12 February, a "Sustainable Development in Action" Google+ Hangout was hosted by the Division for Sustainable Development of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) with the objective of debating follow up actions taken on key outcomes of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development ("Rio+20"). The interactive webchat featured a Q&A portion where people from all over the world could tweet @SustDev or using hashtag #SDinaction or post their questions on Facebook for panelists to answer online.

46th session of the Commission on Population and Development: information on NGO participation

InlineUnder the overall theme of "New Trends in Migration: Demographic Aspects," the Commission on Population and Development will hold its 46th session from 22 to 26 April 2013 at UN Headquarters in New York.

The 46th session of the Commission will allow only the participation of non-governmental organizations that are accredited with ECOSOC. Pre-registration for participation is required and will close on 5 April 2013.

Online Discussion on "Building the future we want with science, technology and innovation (STI) and culture" (from 18 February to 19 March 2013)

InlineCivil society is invited to participate in an e-discussion on "Building the future we want with science, technology and innovation (STI) and culture," jointly organized by UNDESA, UNDP and UNESCO. The e-discussion will bring together experts, researchers and practitioners from within and outside of the UN system to brainstorm on challenges and untapped opportunities in the use of STI and culture for sustainable development solutions. Its expected outcomes are critical policy messages to the ECOSOC Annual Ministerial Review (Geneva, July 2013).

The e-discussion will run from 18 February - 19 March 2013.
