UN agencies ramp up humanitarian efforts in Syria

At least four United Nations agencies are bolstering relief efforts in Syria amid compromised water and sanitation systems and a shortage of doctors, ambulances and hospitals. UNICEF is planning to provide water-purification supplies to more than 10 million Syrians, and the World Food Programme is expanding its operations to reach up to 2.5 million people. • Malaria deaths down, but so is funding
The global fight against malaria could soon be locally driven rather than internationally, said Ray Chambers, the United Nations special envoy for malaria, at a recent gathering of the Harvard Malaria Forum. Even as global fatalities from the disease have fallen by 26% over the past decade, funding, too, has been falling, according to a report by the World Health Organization. The International Crisis Group is shuttering its offices in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, but not before publishing a report that says the country "risks international abandonment" because it does not have an agreement to ensure the cooperation of the political, economic and social elite. • Islamist threat in Africa: Not another Afghanistan
The Islamist militancy in Africa's Sahel and Sahara is being compared by some Western leaders to a global threat like that of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But militants in Africa are often focused on local grievances, Aidan Lewis argues, do not necessarily act in unison and often driven more by opportunism than ideology.
