The United Nations General Assembly is expected today to approve a resolution calling for a political transition in Syria and condemning the Assad regime's rising weapons use, UN envoys say. Russia and several Latin American countries aren't supporting the resolution. Separately, the UN Security Council is considering whether to list the Islamist al-Nusra Front as a terrorist group or as another name for al-Qaida. UN: Sanctions have slowed North Korea's nuclear program
A United Nations expert panel says North Korea's nuclear program is being stymied by sanctions. "While the imposition of sanctions has not halted the development of nuclear and ballistic missile programs, it has in all likelihood considerably delayed [North Korea's] timetable," the panel wrote in a report to the UN Security Council. Iran says heading disarmament committee is appropriate
Iran has defended its right to lead the United Nations Conference on Disarmament for four weeks as part of the rotating nature of the chairman position.
