Ban presses Security Council to act on Syrian relief
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for the third time on the Security Council to take immediate action on humanitarian aid for Syria. Emergency relief still isn't reaching millions of Syrian civilians despite earlier resolutions, he reported. "Parties to the conflict, particularly the government of Syria, continue to deny access for humanitarian assistance in a completely arbitrary and unjustifiable manner. I remind the council that intentionally using starvation as a weapon of war is a gross violation of ... humanitarian law," Ban said in the report. Caribbean countries face tough choice on funding MDGs
Funding limitations are forcing the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States to choose between projects combating climate change or those to meet the Millennium Development Goals on poverty and hunger. Potential EU funding to help with climate change issues may alleviate some of the strain of trying to meet both objectives. "The Caribbean is one of the most disaster-prone regions in the world, but we tend to ignore the threat that could occur as a result of the impact of climate change," says Mikael Barford, head of the EU delegation to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
