UNICEF: Funds needed to stave off malnutrition in Somalia
UNICEF on Tuesday made an urgent funding appeal to prevent as many as 200,000 children in Somalia from dying of severe malnutrition. Just $15 million of a $150 million appeal has been received, UNICEF said. "If funding is not received immediately, UNICEF will have to suspend essential life-saving health services within one month," said Christophe Boulierac, a UNICEF spokesman. How to innovate in the development field
Global development is embracing innovation, but there are still misunderstandings about what innovation means, Eliza Villarino writes. The development community would do well to focus on innovation's positive aspects, such as incremental change, collaboration and knowledge-sharing. "Innovation comes with risks and for so long, many global development organizations have not been comfortable taking risks, fearing failure will make them less appealing to donors," she writes. "That is changing." Devex.com (free registration) (5/22)

Child marriage violates human rights, UNFPA officials say
Child marriage in Africa breaks two global human-rights agreements and the practice must end, write Julitta Onabanjo, Benoit Kalasa and Mohamed Abdel-Ahad, regional directors of the United Nations Population Fund. "It is therefore an obligation of policy makers on the continent to protect the rights of the girl child that their governments have committed themselves to uphold. This includes putting an end to child marriage," they write. Inter Press Service (5/28)
