Osama bin Laden killed in U.S. attack

Osama bin Laden, the elusive founder of al-Qaida who took credit for masterminding the 9/11 attacks of 2001, was killed in a raid by U.S. forces on his compound in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad. The news was delivered by U.S. President Barack Obama in a televised announcement late Sunday night. Bin Laden had been residing in the compound not far from the capital Islamabad, in an area with a heavy Pakistani military presence. U.S. clandestine operatives were able to pick up bin Laden's trail via the movements of a courier who had been under surveillance.
