Why the world needs the Global Fund

In the 10 years since its founding, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has worked in 150 countries, passed out 230 million anti-malarial bed nets, treated a reported 8 million cases of tuberculosis and supported the treatment of 3.3 million HIV-positive individuals with antiretroviral drugs. The coming decade will bring new challenges for the Global Fund. Paul Farmer, a public health expert and co-founder of Partners in Health, explains why the world needs an effective and well-financed Global Fund. • Study: Rush for African land could spark wars
Governments in the developing world that don't do more to protect the land rights of millions are risking conflict, and even civil war, according to research on 35 African countries published Wednesday by the Rights and Resources Initiative. Much of the global land rush for scarce resources and arable land is occurring in sub-Saharan Africa, where half a billion people depend on 1.4 billion hectares of communally-held rural land.
