Grupo de Personas Notables de Todo el Mundo pide que la visita del Papa a Cuba sea una oportunidad para que cese la represión y se de inicio al diálogo.
"Ustedes no son víctimas", dijo el Papa Juan Pablo II al pueblo cubano durante su peregrinación en1998. "Ustedes son y deben ser los protagonistas de su propia historia personal y nacional".
El gobierno de Cuba debe abstenerse de hostigar a los disidentes. Un eminente grupo de intelectuales, políticos y representantes de la sociedad civil piden que "Durante la próxima visita del Papa Benedicto XVI a la isla se debe aprovechar la visita para crear un espacio para el diálogo"; dentro de este grupo de personajes eminentes lo forma, entre muchos, un ganador del Premio Nobel, tres ex presidentes latinoamericanos, el ex canciller checo, un prominente miembro de la familia real de Jordania, un ex Primer Ministro de Canadá, y una lista de los principales disidentes, parlamentarios y activistas de derechos humanos.
"Es hora de que cese la represión para que los cubanos puedan ejercer sus libertades en pos de esa visión", dice la declaración - ahora una petición en-línea - firmado por el Nobel de la Paz el Arzobispo Desmond Tutu, los ex presidentes latinoamericanos, Luis Alberto Monge Álvarez, Costa Rica (1982 - 1986), Alfredo Cristiani, El Salvador (1989 - 1994), Armando Calderón Sol, El Salvador (1994 -1999), el Canciller Checo, Karel Schwarzenberg, su Alteza Real el Príncipe Hassan bin Talal, y la ex Primer Ministro canadiense Ministro Excma. Kim Campbell, junto a estos también han firmado insignes disidentes, eminentes defensores de la democracia y activistas de derechos humanos como Martin Palous, Director de la Biblioteca Vaclav Havel, en Praga, el filósofo y escritor francés André Glucksmann, el escritor católico y teólogo Michael Novak, el Dr. Alaksandr Milinkievic de Bielorrusia, Premio Sajarov 2006, varios disidentes chinos importantes y 14 miembros del Parlamento lituano (lista completa a continuación).

El destino de estos defensores de la democracia no violentos reitera el imperativo moral de exigir la libertad y la justicia para el pueblo cubano.
Instamos al gobierno de Cuba a que aproveche la ocasión de la próxima visita de su Santidad el Papa Benedicto XVI para frenar la represión de las fuerzas de seguridad del Estado y los grupos de servidores cuasi-civiles y se termine la práctica de hostigar a los disidentes. Este gesto ayudaría a crear un espacio de reflexión y de diálogo que permitirá al pueblo de Cuba superar la intolerancia y la hostilidad a través de la recuperación de las libertades civiles y el desarrollo de una democracia plena y vibrante, sin más pérdidas de vidas humanas.

Cuba's government should refrain from harassing dissidents during Pope Benedict XVI's forthcoming visit to the island and should take advantage of the visit to create space for dialogue, says an eminent persons' group, comprising a Nobel Peace Prize winner, three former Latin American Presidents, the Czech Foreign Minister, a prominent member of Jordan's royal family, a former Canadian Prime Minister, and a roster of leading dissidents, parliamentarians and rights activists.
"It is time for repression to cease so that Cubans can exercise their freedoms in pursuit of that vision," says the statement - now an on-line petition - signed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu; former Latin American presidents Luis Alberto Monge Alvarez, Costa Rica (1982 - 1986), Alfredo Cristiani, El Salvador (1989 - 1994), Armando Calderón Sol, El Salvador (1994 -1999); Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg; HRH Prince Hassan bin Talal; and former Canadian Prime Minister Rt. The occasion of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Cuba provides a vital opportunity to highlight the denial of freedom, democracy and basic human rights to the island's people, according to a transatlantic consortium of pro-democracy and civil society groups, including Forum 2000, UN Watch, People in Need, and the World Movement for Democracy, which secured the signatories' endorsement of the following statement:
The world was reminded of the human cost of denial of fundamental freedoms in Cuba by the recent tragic deaths of imprisoned dissident Wilman Villar Mendoza, following a hunger strike, and Laura Inés Pollán Toledo, leader of the internationally-renowned Ladies in White.
Over the past year, we also witnessed the deaths of human rights activists Orlando Zapata Tamayo, following a hunger strike protesting his unjust imprisonment for his ideas, and Juan Wilfredo Soto Garcia, who died as a result of a brutal beating by security forces.
The fate of these nonviolent democracy advocates reiterates the moral imperative to demand freedom and justice for Cuba's people.
We urge Cuba's government to use the occasion of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI's forthcoming visit to restrain the government's security forces and quasi-civilian proxies from harassing dissidents. Such a gesture would help create a space for reflection and dialog that will allow Cuba's people to transcend intolerance and animosity through the recovery of civil liberties and the development of a full and vibrant democracy, without any further loss of human life.
