World Water Day spotlights growing need, dwindling sources

On World Water Day, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization warned that 70% more water would be needed to produce enough food for the planet's growing population by 2050, while the world body's World Water Development Report projected that the need could be even greater if crop yields and production aren't drastically improved. Two-thirds of all people could be living under water-stressed conditions in about a decade, according to the FAO. AlertNet (3/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"As you probably were not aware, a member of the Oklahoma state legislature introduced a resolution last month to call on the U.S. Congress to withdraw from the United Nations. The Oklahoma state legislature has no authority over American relations with the United Nations, so the bill simply encouraged the US Congress to pull out of UNICEF, the WFP, The Security Council and all parts of the UN."

  • Violence rages in Syria as UN seeks cease-fire
The newfound unity displayed by the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday in calling for a cease-fire in Syria appeared to have little effect on the ground, as violence flared today across the country. The plan calls for a UN-supervised truce. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, "In clear and unmistakable terms, the Security Council called for an immediate end to all violence and human rights violations. It demanded secure humanitarian access and a comprehensive political dialogue between the government and the whole spectrum of the Syrian opposition." • GOP budget plan would slash foreign aid
The austerity budget proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., would lop off a great deal of spending on diplomacy and foreign affairs, with more than $4 billion in cuts planned for fiscal 2013 and an additional $3 billion for fiscal 2014. Spending drops continue, with the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development not returning to 2012 funding for a decade. Physicians at Médecins Sans Frontières say they are shocked by the rapid spread of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, a trend that has been revealed in especially alarming numbers in Uzbekistan, South Africa, India and Myanmar. "We need new drugs, new research, new programs and a new commitment from international donors and governments to tackle this deadly disease," said MSF President Unni Karunakara. • India's enormous "philanthrocapitalism" potential
In an interview, Matthew Bishop, New York editor-in-chief of The Economist, talks about market-based philanthropy in India. "India is probably one of the leading areas of experimentation, where there is quite a lot of potential," says Bishop, who adds that the country has a mix of old-style philanthropy and a new philanthropy called impact investing. • Hydropower could hold key to Africa energy access
The potential for hydroelectric power in Africa is so great that it could meet the electricity needs of the entire continent, according the latest UN World Water Development Report. While technological challenges are significant, the report says the greatest impediment to Africa-wide electricity projects is cooperation among governments. • Soldiers engineer coup in Mali
A cadre of soldiers took over Mali's TV stations and announced the removal of President Amadou Toumani Toure, just weeks before a planned election. The U.S. condemned the coup, and United Nations and African Union leaders called for calm. The coup leaders alleged that the current government had been too lax in combating an insurgency by Tuareg nomads living in the northern part of the West African nation. • Campaign to capture Kony ramps up
The voices of those living in areas affected by Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army should be at the center of the global conversation over the Kony 2012 campaign, write Lindsay Branham, a documentary photographer, and Jocelyn Kelly, director of the Women in War Program at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. Uganda announced that its troops will lead a new regional force of 5,000 to hunt down Kony, and refugees urged international efforts to "finish" the LRA and its leader. • Childhood TB neglected, despite remedies
Tuberculosis (TB) often goes undiagnosed in children from birth to 15 years old because they lack access to health services -- or because the health workers who care for them are unprepared to recognize the signs and symptoms of TB in this age group. With better training and harmonization of the different programs that provide health services for children, serious illness and death from TB could be prevented in thousands of children every year according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Stop TB Partnership.
