Happy Holidays!

Stand up for women's rights. Tell the Senate that it's time to Ratify CEDAW!

TAKE ACTION NOW!

As the holidays approach, the staff here at GlobalSolutions.org wants to wish all of our members a safe and happy season. Here’s what we’ve been up to this month:

Women’s Rights Treaty

As you know, November’s elections ushered in the most diverse Congress in history. 20 female Senators will represent us in the 113th session of Congress. We’re using this momentum to make women’s rights a priority in the next session of Congress, specifically by calling on our Senators to finally ratify the Women’s Rights Treaty (CEDAW). The Women's Rights Treaty is a strong tool that the international community uses to protect women and girls from violence, end injustices such as forced marriage and trafficking, and provide access to education and vocational training. As the only developed nation that has yet to do so, we're keeping company with nations like Somalia, Iran and Sudan. If you haven’t signed our petition, do it now! We really need as many signatures as possible to make a huge impact when we deliver it in person to our Senators on the first day of Congress, January 3. Then share it with family and friends and post the link on your social networks.

Disability Rights Treaty

The Unites States Senate voted on December 4th on the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), falling just short of the two-thirds majority needed for the Senate to ratify an international treaty. It is important to note that the vast majority of Senators did indeed vote for ratification, proving just how close we are to achieving ascension to an international treaty. Don Kraus, CEO of GlobalSolutions.org, wrote in an op-ed for the Huffington Post, “A majority of U.S. voters support adopting each one of the above-mentioned treaties. Business, labor, civil society, and national security leaders are behind them too. The only thing missing is leadership and a serious discussion of the consequences of this national failure.” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) vowed to bring CRPD up for a vote again in the next year. Senator Reid is not giving up on ratification of the Disabilities Treaty and neither are we! We pledge to follow this issue in 2013 and hold Senator Reid to his promise to make international disabilities rights a reality for all!
