Gang rape in India sparks debate on women's rights

Indians have been publicly debating since the Dec. 16 gang rape and beating of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in the capital, Delhi. Nearly two weeks of demonstrations have injured police and protesters alike. "[T]he public has been largely apathetic to women's plight, but many are hoping the attack could be a turning point in the way India treats women," writes Shivam Vij. The unnamed victim is "fighting for her life" in critical condition, while the teenage victim of a gang rape last month has committed suicide. • UNDP's Clark: More women in power benefits society as a whole
Women and men should have equal opportunities to hold leadership positions in government, says Helen Clark, head of the United Nations Development Programme. "At UNDP, we believe that women bring different life experiences and perspectives to policymaking. It is the combination of these experiences and perspectives of men and of women which brings about the best policies for society overall," said Clark, citing benefits in transparency, rule of law, accountability, corruption and gender equality. • Charity challenges norms with free money to poor
The charity GiveDirectly delivers 92 cents of every dollar donated online directly to households in Kenya, challenging philanthropic models by hedging that recipients know better than organization how to spend the money. "They hoped the recipients would spend it on nutrition, health care, and education. But, theoretically, they could use it to purchase alcohol or drugs. The families would decide on their own," writes journalist Dana Goldstein. The Atlantic online (12/21) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Greed, poverty taking toll on Gabon's elephants
The consequences of the soaring price of ivory are affecting longtime wildlife champion Gabon, where 10,000 elephants have been slaughtered over the past several years by criminals and poor hunters. "It is a story of temptation -- and exploitation -- and it shows that the problem is not just about demand, but about supply as well. Poverty, as well as greed, is killing Africa's elephants," writes Jeffrey Gettleman. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (12/26) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The first months of next year are critical to Somalia, observers say, as Somalis are looking for tangible proof that the installed government is better than al-Shabab militants routed from much of the country by African Union forces. Conditions are expected to continue deteriorating in Mali. The Christian Science Monitor (12/27) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
