Yields of important food crops stall

Production of several key crops is increasing in some parts of the world, but a study reports that in up to 39% of growing areas of corn, rice, wheat and soybeans, "yields either never improve, stagnate or collapse." "This finding is particularly troubling because it suggests that we have preferentially focused our crop improvement efforts on feeding animals and cars, as we have largely ignored investments in wheat and rice, crops that feed people and are the basis of food security in much of the world," said Jonathan Foley, co-author of the study. Negotiations are slated to resume at the United Nations on a treaty aimed at regulating the global trade in conventional weapons, with possible ramifications for U.S. domestic debate over guns. • Where did Haitian aid go? Not into reconstruction
Nearly three years after an earthquake forced hundreds of thousands of Haitians into camps, so-called "return cash grants" -- payments that cover a year's rent -- have emerged as the primary tool to persuade camp-dwellers to return to their shattered neighborhoods. "One area where the reconstruction money didn't go is into actual reconstruction," said Jessica Faieta, formerly of the United Nations Development Program in Haiti. State-of-the-art drones designed for U.S. military purposes are expected to be deployed against rhino poachers in South Africa. "We need to change the rules of the game. We need technology. The only thing that can see these people before they do the dirty deed is surveillance drones," said Clive Vivier of the Zululand rhino reserve. Observers fear a repeat of the 2007 election violence that killed more than 1,200 people in Kenya, as national elections scheduled for March take on an ethnic character. Former Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta, who is second to Prime Minister Raila Odinga in polls, is slated for trial before the the International Criminal Court in April on charges that he directed youths from the Kikuyu tribe to attack ethnic Luo five years ago.
