UN leaves as East Timor is ready to "stand on its own feet"

United Nations peacekeeping operations ended today in East Timor, 13 years after the nation voted for independence from Indonesia, sparking political and ethnic violence. The country can now "stand on its own feet" both politically and developmentally, said Finn Reske-Nielsen, chief of the UN's Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste. Deputy Prime Minister Fernando La Sama de Araujo said, "In the end, we have to say goodbye to the UN with ... high appreciation." "Timor Leste has come a very long way. It is now a country that no longer needs UN peacekeepers to ensure security. The peacekeeping mission formally ends on December 31st, marking a huge turning point in the once violence-plagued country."
