Emergency UN meeting called over Africa drought, famine

An emergency meeting of ministers and senior representatives from 191 UN member countries, UN organizations, NGOs and regional development banks has been scheduled for July 25 to formulate the humanitarian response to the devastating drought and famine in east Africa. The United Nations today officially declared famine in parts of Somalia after determining that more than 30% of children suffer from malnutrition, more than two people per 10,000 die daily and access to food is well below 2,100 kilocalories daily. "While inconclusive, if Italy did supply these arms to the Libyan rebels in late May, it would join France in the legal gray area between civilian protection and the arms embargo."

  • UNESCO: Buddhist destination is underfunded
Lumbini, the holy Buddhist destination in southwestern Nepal, is in danger of falling into obscurity despite its importance as birthplace of the future Buddha, and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A lack of foreign investment, and the disbandment of an international development committee formed by the United Nations, has meant that only about half of the proposed master plan has been completed. • Time to increase measles-vaccination efforts
Measles outbreaks have hit several European countries, the U.S. and New Zealand this year despite the relative ease of preventing infection. A two-dose vaccination protects an individual from measles and the disability or death it can cause. The Huffington Post (7/19) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Africa needs more humanitarian aid, but donors are wary
Only $3.6 billion has been donated of the $7.9 billion needed through the end of this year to help the estimated 50 million people suffering from disasters, drought and violence in 31 countries, according to a UN official. Recent and ongoing conflicts in Africa have generated a greater need for food, shelter and other humanitarian aid, but donors have been reluctant to pay for assistance in West Africa, Zimbabwe, Djibouti and Niger. • Report: Polio-eradication deadline is "off track"
Efforts to eradicate polio by 2012 are unlikely to succeed as vaccination efforts continue to be plagued by funding gaps, ineffective administration and political considerations, according to an assessment from the Independent Monitoring Board of the Global Polio Eradication initiative. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo have all been battling an increased number of polio cases in 2011. • Promoting public-private development programs in Nigeria
Better partnerships between the public and private sectors are necessary to improve the lives of women and children in Nigeria, according to Toyin Saraki, head of the country's Every Woman, Every Child initiative. "It is only with [private sector] support that we can make this happen, and develop the vision into something larger than ourselves," she said recently at the launch of the program in conjunction with the United Nations Foundation. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton highlighted the importance of clean cookstoves during her visit to India, announcing that two major Indian business federations will join the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves effort to provide 100 million homes with cleaner cooking devices by 2020. Indian authorities blame cooking fires for the deaths of 400,000 people a year and traditional cookstoves for as much as a quarter of the country's greenhouse-gas emissions. The increasing risk to natural resources from climate change is a global security concern and may trigger social upheaval and armed conflict around the world, Achim Steiner, head of the United Nations Environment Programme told the Security Council on Wednesday. Mass migrations of people away from areas where resources are scarce and disputes between countries over dwindling supplies are among the biggest risks Steiner cited.
