| - Gates Foundation is out to "reinvent the toilet"
The Bill Melinda Gates Foundation intends to become the key investor in improvements to sanitation in developing countries with the announcement Tuesday of a $42 million grant scheme to spur innovation and encourage behavioral changes. "We need to reinvent the toilet," the head of the foundation's global development program said Tuesday, adding that improvements might include waterless toilets that do not rely on sewer connections, as well as hygienic ways to empty pits and process waste. The Guardian (London) (7/19) - Complacency is blamed for resurgence of polio in Nigeria
A drop-off in vaccinations against polio in six states in northern Nigeria has resulted in a resurgence of the disease, threatening to reverse last year's near-eradication of the disease countrywide. "We have come too far in our fight against polio to contemplate a relapse. Complacency is probably the biggest danger that might jeopardize success in eradicating polio," deputy head of UNICEF for Nigeria, Jacques Boyer, told a gathering of traditional and religious leaders Tuesday. Google/Agence France-Presse (7/19) - "Healthcare deserts" leave 40 million kids at risk
While child mortality is on the decline worldwide, an estimated 40 million children under five in poor countries remain at high risk of death because they do not have access to basic vaccines, such as diphtheria and tetanus, or oral rehydration therapy for diarrhea, according to a report by Save the Children. The report says some 14% of children in 25 developing countries live in what it calls "healthcare deserts." The Guardian (London)/Sarah Boseley's Global Health Blog (7/20) - Recruitment of child soldiers is rising in Somalia
The exodus of tens of thousands of Somalis escaping drought and violence has heightened the danger to children of recruitment as soldiers by Islamic insurgents. Amnesty International says the methods used by the armed groups -- targeting children between 10 and 17, but sometimes as young as 8 -- include luring children with promises of money and cellphones, and abduction and raids on schools. BBC (7/19) - Cooking to promote sustainability
Clean cookstove projects in the developing world are helping promote sustainability of local resources by decreasing communities' reliance on wood burning devices and the cutting of down of trees. The United Nations Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries and the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves aim to have more than 100 million homes using clean cookstoves by 2020. MediaGlobal (7/19) - UNICEF collection boxes go high-tech
The orange trick-or-treat boxes carried from house to house by many costumed children in the U.S. on Halloween are being outfitted with special tags that, through mobile technology, will enable donors to give money to UNICEF online in addition to, or instead of, putting change into the boxes. After scanning a Microsoft Tag on the boxes with their cellphones, donors will be delivered to a special UNICEF website. FastCompany.com (7/19) - FDA offers mHealth app guidelines
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has proposed new regulations to help guide the development of mobile health applications and protect patient safety. The Washington Post (7/19) - Syria tries to curtail diplomats' travel
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem delivered a stark warning to U.S. and French ambassadors today to refrain from leaving the capital Damascus without permission. Both ambassadors traveled to Hama this month to express their support for the right of people to demonstrate against the government. Al-Moallem said repeat trips by the two could trigger a ban for all foreign diplomats on travel outside Damascus.
