WFP is working beyond immediate famine needs

A devastating combination of drought, elevated food prices and security concerns has left millions affected by famine across East Africa and immediate action is needed to support humanitarian efforts, World Food Programme official Greg Barrow writes. Beyond immediate assistance, humanitarian organizations are working to promote long-term sustainable solutions that will help residents in drought-prone areas better manage the effects. "The thing is, unlike the United States or certain European countries with historical ties to recipient countries, Norway does not have deep strategic interests in the places to which it gives aid. This makes it a great donor."

  • UN needs a special rep for climate-security issues
United Nations members should endorse the appointment of special representative on climate change and security to help map UN action on conflict surrounding climate change effects, Nauru's UN Ambassador Marlene Moses writes. Last week, the Security Council formally acknowledged the link between climate concerns and security with a statement, but disagreements over what active role the UN should play remain. A soccer star from Cote d'Ivoire, Didier Drogba, who has been among the top goalscorers in the English Premier League, is helping to reduce the spread of malaria by providing thousands of mosquito nets, chiefly in West Africa, and building a hospital to serve residents of Abidjan, the country's capital. "I had malaria, I know exactly what it feels like, and it's something that I want to stop," Drogba said Saturday in Thailand, where he passed out to children hundreds of mosquito nets bearing his likeness. • Food security failures could spread famine, UN warned
The French agricultural minister warned of a surge in the cycle of famine and starvation if the international community doesn't do more to boost global food security. "If we don't take the necessary measures, famine will be the scandal of this century," Bruno Le Maire said at UN talks in Rome over the ongoing famine in East Africa, which was brought on, in part, by the worst drought there in 60 years.
