UN chief tries to rally world support for Somalia aid

Tens of thousands have already died in Somalia amid the ongoing crisis affecting 11 million people, labeled a famine Wednesday by the United Nations, brought on by conflict, high food prices and drought. Ban Ki-moon, secretary-general of the world body, is trying to focus world attention on the crisis and raise about $1.6 billion to save the lives of those at risk, the vast majority of whom are women and children. • UN report blasts Congo forces for rape
Investigators have identified dozens of females assaulted and raped over the New Year period by government troops in the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a new United Nations report. Rape has been used systematically as a weapon of war in the Democratic Republic of Congo for more than 15 years with an estimated 1,000 women raped every day. • Somali militants reassert aid ban
Islamist rebels in Somalia insist that a ban on certain Western aid groups remains in force despite earlier claims by the United Nations that the restrictions had been lifted. A spokesman for al-Shabaab characterized UN reports of famine as "sheer propaganda," accusing the world body of exaggerating the severity of the drought. • Pakistan polio campaign struggles in CIA aftermath
Recent revelations about a fake CIA vaccination program used in the hunt for Osama bin Laden added to the myriad of challenges facing Pakistan's latest polio-vaccination program. Mobile migrant populations, infrastructure gaps and public fears over vaccines have helped leave Pakistan as the only country in the world to where polio remains endemic that cases are rising. • Egyptian women seek to protect rights efforts
Women's rights campaigners are seeking to unite activists to prevent Islamist groups and other conservatives from increasing the marginalization of Egyptian women. Domestic violence and discrimination are common challenges for Egyptian women, with little legal support to protect them, and campaigners hoped the post-Mubarak era would bring an end to exclusion. Climate and Energy
  • Leaders are urged not to wait on climate change
The head of the UN climate panel was urging world governments not to wait for more scientific evidence of climate change before battling the effects of global warming, while members of the world body's powerful Security Council were considering bolstering peacekeeping missions in areas where climate change is undercutting security. Some are proposing new environmental peacekeeping forces, or so-called green helmets. The Hill/E2 Wire blog (7/20) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • World's small fish need protection
Smaller fish species such as anchovies and sardines play a vital role in marine ecosystems and should be safeguarded from overfishing, according to a study published in the journal Science. More than 30% of world fish consumption and production consists of small fish, but overfishing has severely impacted fish stocks of several species. • Oil, gas exploration urged despite Mideast border quagmire
The long-running dispute over maritime borders between Israel and Lebanon should not interfere with the countries' efforts to explore for oil and gas, according to a senior UN envoy. "It's difficult for the UN to find a way forward here," said Michael Williams, the world body's special coordinator for Lebanon, adding that maritime disputes are common, and companies can simply avoid contested areas. • Social media for disaster response
Disaster responders increasingly see social media as a tool to help generate rapid information on needs and damage in affected areas.
