Online donations surged 53% on Giving Tuesday

Nonprofit organizations received more than $10 million from online donations on Giving Tuesday, which was 53% more than a year ago, according to the United Nations Foundation. The national day of giving coincided with an event by a consulting firm, Conversations with Remarkable Givers, that attempted to determine "why, when, how and to whom do wealthy people give?" writes Emi Kolawole. Among the other projects -- characterized as "lighthouse activities" for their potential to help the poor on a global scale -- are electric cars in Sri Lanka, water purification in Kenya and energy-efficient bricks in Peru.
