UN needs nearly $13B to fund "extraordinary year" for humanitarian relief
The United Nations is asking for $12.94 billion in humanitarian aid assistance due to increased relief demands from Syria and its neighbors, as well as the Central African Republic and Mali. At least 73 million people combined in 24 countries are in need of assistance, says Valerie Amos, UN undersecretary-general. "In a normal year, that would be a huge statement to the commitment to humanitarian action," she said. "But this is an extraordinary year." The recent school lunch poisoning and deaths of schoolchildren in the Indian state of Bihar is raising questions about how India will ensure safety under its proposed food-security program, writes Heather Timmons. "India's finance minister, P. Chidambaram, assured reporters that almost all states were ready to implement the food program.
