Palestinian bid for UN recognition faces challenges

Palestinians are considering a bid to seek United Nations recognition for an independent state despite opposition from Israel and the U.S. Palestinians would need to secure approval from the Security Council and avoid a U.S. veto before moving on to a vote in the General Assembly, where they would need to get a two-thirds vote of approval to complete the process. "The strategy is to create certain demographic realities on the ground that would make it much harder for South Sudan to lay claim to oil fields in the region once the south declares independence. It is a brutal strategy, but so far it seems to be working: There is a massive population shift underway right now in Abyei and Kordofan."

  • UN expresses concern over Sudan
Panic is growing among residents of the Kordofan area of central Sudan where ethnic clashes have displaced tens of thousands and aid convoys are blocked, United Nations officials warn. Sudanese officials have lifted restrictions placed on aid workers in south Darfur because of security threats, according to the UN-African Union peacekeeping mission there. • UN faces quandary over Sri Lanka aircraft offer
United Nations' acceptance of attack helicopters and other aircraft offered by Sri Lanka would likely generate not only controversy, but a U.S. investigation of alleged war crimes committed against civilians during the end of the country's civil war in 2009. The world body is in desperate need of combat equipment for its missions in places such as Sudan and DR Congo. ForeignPolicy.com/Turtle Bay blog (6/15) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • U.S. official warns against cuts to UN funding
A U.S. State Department official told American lawmakers that proposed cuts in UN funding would lead to setbacks in the country's interests at the world body, specifically concerning human rights and efforts to normalize Israel's status. "If we cede ground, if our engagement in the UN system is restricted, these bodies likely would be dominated by our adversaries," said Esther Brimmer, an assistant secretary of state. • Syphilis care to protect newborns
Inexpensive tests and treatment for syphilis among pregnant women could reduce the number of newborn deaths and stillbirths by half, according to research by British scientists published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal. About 2 million pregnant women are infected with syphilis every year, with 1.2 million passing the infection on to their babies. AlertNet/Reuters (6/15) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Task force questions U.S. nuclear safety
U.S. nuclear watchdog officials are raising concerns that current safety regulations at American nuclear facilities fail to take into account the impact a single severe event could have on electricity powering grids and emergency generators. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission created a task force to review U.S. nuclear safety standards after an earthquake and tsunami triggered a major accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in March. • Twittering around Saudi censure, harassment
Social media platforms are enabling rare public debate in Saudi Arabia beyond the reach of government censure. Some 30,000 comments -- near-unanimous in their support for a woman who posted a video of herself driving an SUV in defiance of a ban on female drivers -- have been posted on Twitter. A man who helped start a boycott of municipal elections notes he is forbidden by law to gather people in a room, but can reach more than 22,000 people instantly on Twitter. Medic Mobile has unveiled a new application for mHealth that uses a SIM card rather than an iPhone app to deliver services. SIM cards operate on about 80% of the world's cellular telephones including inexpensive models that are popular with consumers in developing countries. • Diplomats stymied in bid to end Libyan conflict
The insistence by Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi on remaining in the country is complicating international efforts to broker a resolution to months of popular revolt as NATO warplanes continued airstrikes while enforcing a no-fly zone and protecting civilians from attacks by government forces. A diplomatic solution could be further hampered by a ruling by the International Criminal Court on a pending request for arrest warrants for Gadhafi and two relatives.
