Plan for Security Council reform gains momentum

The governments of more than 100 countries reportedly have already lent their support to a plan that, in principle, would reform the UN Security Council by expanding the number of permanent seats. Japan, Brazil, Germany and India are lobbying widely for permanent membership on the powerful body. Google/The Associated Press (6/30) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

"Even if the conflicts ended today, and there is zero chance any of them will, each of these countries would be paying the human price for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom for decades to come."

  • Donations are flagging for new UN Women
The head of UN Women Michelle Bachelet has called upon potential donors to "walk the talk" by making financial contributions to the new agency, which is only one-fifth of the way toward meeting its funding target. While Spain, Norway and Canada lead the list in pledges, Great Britain -- which claims a leadership role in the agency -- is notably absent. • Syria gets warnings over reforms, border violations
After failing to push through a resolution at the United Nations Security Council condemning Syria over its heavy-handed response to popular unrest, Western powers are heaping criticism on the country's regime for allegedly allowing protesters to cross into Israel, the first serious border violations in decades. The council renewed the mandate for a UN observer force in Syria's Golan Heights, currently occupied by Israel. • UN gains limited access to Sudan border area
The government of Sudan has relented somewhat in its refusal to grant access to the United Nations to parts of South Kordofan, the scene of looting and fierce clashes between the military and armed groups aligned with the soon-to-be-independent south. Aid agencies were permitted to visit looted offices in the capital, Kadugli, but prohibited from meeting with some 7,000 civilians ordered by authorities last week to leave the UN compound where they had sought safety. • Iraq assumes control from UN over oil revenues
The Iraqi takeover Thursday of a multibillion-dollar fund established from oil and gas revenues in 2003 was lauded by the UN Security Council, which regards the transfer from UN oversight as a milestone in the country's autonomy. The council urged the Iraqi government "to ensure that oil revenue is used in the interests of the Iraqi people." Forbes/The Associated Press (6/30) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

The United Nations will increase the presence of peacekeepers in western Cote d'Ivoire with the addition of eight new bases in a bid to increase security ahead of legislative elections scheduled for October, says Choi Young-jin, head of the local UN mission. Tens of thousands of people in the region remain displaced as a result of violence that erupted after former President Laurent Gbagbo refused to recognize results of a November presidential poll. • U.S. military is concerned by Iran's support of Iraqi militias
Three Shiite militia movements receiving support from Iran currently pose the greatest threat to U.S. troops in Iraq, according to U.S. military officials. All of the groups are using sophisticated weapons, such as armor-piercing grenades, believed to be supplied by Iran and are receiving training from special forces associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, says U.S. military spokesman Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan. The Washington Post (6/30) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Study shows that AD syringes help stem infections from vaccination shots
The Measles Initiative and the GAVI Alliance (formerly the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation) announced today that infections resulting from the re-use of syringes for immunizations have been reduced to practically zero in sub-Saharan Africa, according to a study released in the Supplement of the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

"The use of AD syringes is the best way of ensuring that children receive their shots safely, with no risk of contracting an infection due to contaminated devices," said Dr. Edward Hoekstra, Senior Health Specialist at UNICEF and main author of the study. "This is an encouraging step in reaching high health standards in some of the world's poorest countries." UN Foundation (7/1) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
