[RED DEMOCRATICA] Friend, There's a War on International Law

Dear Friend,

Are you willing to allow Bob Corker, the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to undermine decades of developing international law?  Would you like to see the United States get back into the business of ratifying multilateral treaties?

Corker, the junior senator from Tennessee, has unilaterally decided that the system of reservations, understanding and declarations (commonly known as RUDs) won't "stand the test of time," and therefore is holding up ratification of the Disability Treaty.

Will you chip in $20 to help push back on this latest front in the war against international law?

Ever since the Constitution called for the Senate's "advice and consent" to make treaties, the Senate has used, and the President has accepted, RUDs to clarify or limit an agreement's scope. Unfortunately, at a time when our interconnected world more than ever needs clear rules to live by, Corker has chosen to pander to an isolationist Tea Party base and claim that RUDs are no longer good enough.

This is not just about the benign "made in America" Disability Treaty, which helps disabled Americans travel and conduct business abroad.  It's about the entire system of international laws and agreements which address human rights, arms control, climate change and more. Help us stop this war on law.

Corker is not the only threat.  Texas Senator Ted Cruz has made a case in the Harvard Law Review that "the President, even with Senate acquiescence, has no constitutional authority to make a treaty with a foreign nation that gives away any portion of the sovereignty reserved to the states."

At stake is the Women's Equality Treaty (CEDAW), the Arms Trade Treaty, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, the next global climate agreement and more. So ask yourself: will the world our children and grandchildren inherit be better off if nations agree to and live by a clear set of rules?

If your answer is "yes," then donate today and help us:

  • Expand our online visibility to a new generation of global citizens who will support the defense of international law

  • Develop videos and engaging interactive educational tools

  • Strengthen our local networks in 10 target states, where most needed

  • Fact-check the misinformation and lies that undermine U.S. ratification of human rights, arms control and environmental treaties

  • Convene a broad coalition to take this fight to the Senate

We know that the Senate's failure to ratify multilateral agreements has hurt our nation's economy, security and global leadership.  Although the U.S. has a proud history of drafting treaties that export American values, our opponents have assembled a well-funded and integrated group of think tanks, membership organization, media companies and lawmakers to prevent ratification.  Will you be part of the team that stops this insanity? Your contribution is critical to this effort.

I look forward to working with you on this.
