Dear Community:
My phone is ringing out of control. Please help me get the word out to our Latino community that this rumor about Walt-Mart and ICE (Immigration and Custom Enforcement) is NOT TRUE.
A lot of people are calling and are VERY afraid to go out shopping.
Sincerely,
Tony Yapias

Wal-Mart, I.C.E. Deny Rumors About Raids On Shoppers
Reported by: Cristina Flores
Tuesday, Mar 9, 2010 @08:52am
Immigrant advocate Tony Yapias said he started getting the calls and text messages on Sunday that immigration agents would raid Wal-Mart stores to arrest undocumented immigrants. "At first I thought it was a joke," he said. But by Monday, the texts messages and calls only increased. "Between calls and text messages – over 100," said Yapias.
The rumors seem to have started in other parts of the country and spread to Utah. Yapias, who often is a source of information for immigrants in the Salt Lake area said people who contacted him were scared. "They're very concerned, very scared about it. They said 'Tony, tell me this is not true."
Yapias said he went to Wal-Mart himself on Monday and reported to callers that all was fine at the store. He even answered questions during a show on Spanish-language radio to help calm callers who wondered if it was safe to shop at the store. Yapias said he called friends in other states to find out if they'd heard the same rumor. He said people in Kansas City and Washington D.C. told him the same rumors were going around there.
2 News called Wal-Mart's corporate communications. Lorenzo Lopez, from the store's headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas acknowledged that he'd had calls about the rumor over the weekend from news reporters in other states. He said the rumors are "unfounded" and "completely untrue."
Immigration and Customs Enforcement or I.C.E. officials in California said they too had heard the rumors were spreading in various states. Virginia Kice, Western Regional Communications Director released the following statement:
"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) does not comment on its future operations. However, contrary to the reported rumors, ICE has no agreement with
Wal-Mart regarding worksite enforcement operations. We are focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that places priority first on those dangerous criminal aliens who present the greatest risk to security of our communities, not sweeps or raids to target undocumented immigrants indiscriminately."
