Nearly one-third of all food lost to waste, inefficiency

Approximately one-third of all the food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted annually, according to a report of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. A combined 1.3 billion tons of food is lost due to inefficiencies in production and processing, and wasted by being thrown away -- some 222 million tons of which is lost or wasted in rich countries, an amount roughly equal to all the food produced in sub-Saharan Africa.
