Community Leaders Rallying to Turn the Tide on Anti-Immigrant Legislation Rally & March in Solidarity with GA to Draw Attention to Local Efforts which Help Immigrants in NJ
Elizabeth, NJ—Hundreds of community leaders, people of faith and immigrant rights advocates from over 35 different organizations from across the state of New Jersey are expected to gather at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, July 2nd at 9:30 AM. for a press conference and rally before marching to City Hall. The event is called "We are Brothers and Sisters" and is timed to be a part of a national day of action in solidarity with the people of Georgia who are suffering under a newly passed Arizona style immigration law. It is also intended to draw attention to local efforts to pass immigrant friendly legislation and ordinances that will benefit the entire community and alleviate the suffering of immigrants in NJ while awaiting federal comprehensive immigration reform.

This event falls almost exactly one year to the day after the "Let My People Go" vigils, rallies and events took place at a dozen county seats from Sussex County to Cumberland County to protest immigration enforcement programs and policies such as "Secure Communites" that are tearing families apart, wasting taxpayer money and making us all less safe. This year the coalition adds the potential for mandatory implementation of E-Verify and the proposed expansion of immigration detention at the Essex County jail to its list of concerns while it advocates for in-state tuition, passage of the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform. Saturday's event is the continuation of a series of actions that began in September 15, 2009 with the "We Are One Human Family" statewide vigils which took place at 11 locations in ten communities across New Jersey, the "Let My People Go" vigils protesting immigration detention and ICE/police cooperation and the annual "pilgrimages" from Ellis Island to the Elizabeth Detention Center.
